If you decided to apply to an art school, one crucial thing to think about is preparing an art portfolio. Usually, it is always best if you start planning your portfolio development so that you can pace yourself and give each project enough time to work on and polish. This could simply mean thinking about when and how you would work on your portfolio. New York Art Studio’s Summer Portfolio Intensive is great for anyone who is looking to develop an art portfolio by utilizing summertime to their maximum advantage.
Q: What Is the Timeline/Schedule?
The Summer Portfolio Intensive starts in mid-June and ends at the end of August. Within the period, the student would choose any duration between 2 and 8 weeks that would work best for them.
Each class is 4 hours, and the student can choose up to 10 classes per week.
Q: What Is Each Class Experience Like?
During the course, everyone receives an individual curriculum that consists of varying projects for their portfolio. Based on the major and school of interest, the instructor will devise project plans and prompts accordingly.
Our class size is small with less than 8 students so that everyone receives attentive instruction personalized to their own projects. From start to finish, the instructor will check in on each progress you make to help you portray the vision and concept of your piece. Because of these step-by-step guidelines, we do not require any previous art experience to enroll in our program.
Q: What Kind of Work Will I Be Making?
While different art schools would have subtle differences based on the admission committee or specific factors they would prioritize, most art schools look for candidates with foundational skills with creativity, willingness to take risks and experiment, and creativity. Of course, it is not always easy to separate them as separate factors, there are certain artworks that make the viewer move. Well executed artworks aren’t always highly technical. They could be expressive or conceptually intriguing.
There isn’t one answer that fits all when it comes to art portfolio development. Your art portfolio could consist of many different mediums and formats, but keep in mind that including drawings that serve as the index of your foundational skills is crucial.
See this collage example, this charcoal drawing, or even this line drawing done in pen. Some of them show more drawing techniques than others, while others also show room for creativity and free-flow expressions that are not bound by just foundational techniques. And we all know–it’s always easy to be said than done, not to mention the compositional balance you’d have to think about to achieve your vision. Our Summer Portfolio Intensive is there to help you with the fears that could come along in making an art piece. Art making takes a lot of time and effort, so if you want to make the most of it to complete a substantial artwork to put in your portfolio, our instructors can guide you to break the block that could hit you in the process.
Q: What Course Duration Should I Choose?
If you are just starting to prepare an art portfolio and don’t have any piece, we recommend investing as much time as you could depending on your schedule. Everyone has a different pace and working style, but making an art piece could sometimes take much more than you expect. Since art schools usually require around 10-15 pieces per portfolio, you can dedicate summertime to work on your portfolio so that you can focus on your school work during the school year.
If not, think about how much time you can work on your portfolio throughout the course. You would be choosing 10 classes per week, and one class is 4 hours. Plan how much you plan on making during the summer and how much you would be able to get the rest done afterward. Knowing your pace and managing time accordingly would be crucial.
