Your sketchbook should show ideas/thoughts/concepts behind your making process, along with any design or foundational sketches that you’d normally do for fun.
Some colleges specifically ask for a sketchbook because it shows more of an unrestricted side of your creativity and your thought process that your portfolio, as a complete whole, may not necessarily show.
If you are applying to art colleges or art schools, it is a good and important habit to keep a sketchbook and carry it around with you wherever you go so that when the inspiration hits you, you can just draw it out on the spot. Not to mention that this practice becomes a good exercise for your foundational skills.
Despite the rise of electronic devices, we do still think that there is something special about hand drawing or sketches in its tactility and process.
